The mint is the legal tender of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, with the international standardized code MRU, which derives its name from the abbreviation of the country's name, Mauritania.
The Mauta is restricted to the territory of Mauritania and is the only official currency of the country, used for daily transactions and economic activities.
The basic unit of the mouton is the ouguiya, with one mouton equal to five koums. The denominations of banknotes currently in circulation include 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 ouguiya, while coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 ouguiya and 1 koum.
The Mauta replaced the CFA franc as the legal tender of Mauritania in 1973, initially coded MRO. a monetary reform was implemented in 2018 with the issuance of a new currency, the MRU, where 1 new ouguiya is equivalent to 10 old ouguiyas, in order to tackle inflation and simplify the monetary system.
