The Botswana Pula is the official currency of the Republic of Botswana, with the ISO code BWP and symbol P. Its name "Pula" means "rain" in the local Tswana language, symbolizing wealth and prosperity.
The Botswana Pula circulates only in Botswana. The country is located in Southern Africa, which is the only legalized area of use for the Pula. Transactions outside of the country must be exchanged through banks.
One pula is equal to 100 Tebes. Banknotes are available in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 pula; coins are available in denominations of 1, 2, 5 pula and TB 5, 10, 25, 50 to meet daily payment needs.
The Botswana Pula replaced the South African Rand as an independent currency in 1976, marking the country's departure from the South African currency area. Initially pegged to the rand, the currency was later pegged to a basket of currencies, reflecting its economic autonomy.
